Calling all hound lovers!!!

Meet Maple Dixie! That gal hails from Georgia and is 3 yr 9 month old and 57 pounds. And she is all hound through and through!!

She was surrendered after a year with a family she loved very much—through no fault of her own—because they found her “too loud.” She hasn’t been noisy at all in foster care, though she may find her voice once she’s settled. True hound lovers know their expressive natures are part of their charm, and Maple deserves a family who loves her for who she is.

When Maple’s family left, she stood at the gate crying and pacing, hopelessly waiting for them to return. In the two weeks that she’s been in foster care, she’s been very sad and confused, spending most of her time in her crate—though she occasionally ventures out for affection and to give sweet kisses.

We are still getting to know her as she settles in, but a few things about her are already clear: She’s sweet, gentle and loving towards everyone she meets and she gets along well with other dogs. She has lived with other dogs and could do well with another dog as long as she got her fair share of attention. She wouldn't want to compete for those belly rubs.

She LOVES car rides and running errands. She seems to love nature—on trail walks she’ll pause by lakes and ponds to quietly take it all in

She loves walks and has shown zero reactivity towards dogs or people along the way—she’s such a good girl! We can’t say the same for chipmunks. She’s a hound, after all! This girl is super smart. She has gone to obedience classes and knows sit, down, come (most of the time) and "outside". She isn't very interested in toys or playing fetch - she just loves people and exploring.

Like any hound Maple Dixie has a "hound voice" - so she would not do well in an apartment or a residential area where you are neighbors live very close to you. She likes to make her presence known. But true hound lovers understand this is a part of the breed. She has a sassy (but lovable) personality and will speak her mind!

She is crate trained and housebroken, and does still use her crate during the day when people aren't home - though she is fine sleeping on her own at night.

All dogs are up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. All dogs require professional training to become the best family member they can be.

PLEASE READ: If a dog is listed, then s/he is currently available for adoption. Their information is correct to the best of our abilities and the information we have been given as of the day of posting. From time to time we receive new information/photos of a dog and we do recreate their listing, which means their old listing link will no longer be valid. If you are considering a dog but don't apply right away please make sure to search for the dog by name if the link you have no longer works.

Please note, GDRNE does not guarantee the breed of any dog or puppy unless stated that we have run DNA. All breeds listed are educated estimates. Note that if the dog is listed as an "Out of town pet" there are NOT additional transport fees - it is included in our adoption fee Our dogs are rescued from various situations. It is most likely that both their parents were strays and even if not, mixes of some sort and that their grandparents were mixes as well. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
